The primary downside is that the increased file security creates a bit more of a drain on your computer’s memory use and thus you may see a slight slow down in machine speed. Choosing the right online backup service for you can feel overwhelming simply because there are so many different aspects to look at with each service. There are currently far more online backup services available than any one person could ever look through in a lifetime. Sometimes it is easier to narrow down choices by criteria. One of the first things you will want to consider is the reputation of the company that owns the service you are looking at. If a company tends to have more negative reviews than positive, try looking into another company’s product to see if it also suits your needs. The good thing about so many different companies offering similar products is that if one company doesn’t have the reputation you are looking for, you can always try another!

Look at Your Wants Versus Needs

I have been using Syncrify for back up. Me and my team member have scheduled daily back up from our systems to the private cloud server. We feel secure because we ain’t giving our private data to any public cloud service provider the data actually remains in our server and the best part of Syncrify which I feel is that it gives the access of data through internet.


We were faithful users of SugarSync for 3 years, but then started noticing that SugarSync was not always syncing. For example, I’d put a file on our server (which was synched to SugarSync) before leaving work, but when I would try to download it at home I’d fine it missing. It wasn’t until restarting SugarSync, or my computer, or reinstalling the app, or jumping through other hoops that it would start syncing again. This happened over and over for months. Their tech support was little help, and in the end didn’t really seem to care. We moved to Spider Oak and were dazzled by its efficiency and reliability. It just works and keeps on working. Their support is attentive and caring. The only thing missing in Spider Oak is the ability to re-upload files to the same directory you download them from (which was almost a deal breaker), but we’ve learned to live with it. If it’s reliability vs convenience, that’s an easy choice. SugarSync C-, SpiderOak B+ (if they add uploading: A).

BTW, we are heavy users of Dropbox, but only for storage, not backup (which they don’t claim to do anyway).

For the first time ever, I saw a real Unlimited and the cheapest backup plan by “The Transformerz Drive”. Very easy to use software with full of features. Just with a flat rate you can backup all of your data (Important as well as garbage). Even several versions of a single modified file and you can also restore as you need. I just LOVE it. And the support is again simply amazing.

Though it seems a newly born baby in this cloud storage and backup world, I feel that’s why the price is so less and quite simple software with full of features. The main drawback is that the website is not fully equipped.


I’m looking for a backup service simply to archive my files on the cloud. These are primarily media files (photos, videos, etc.) that I want to be stored securely somewhere. I’m keeping all my documents that need frequent editing and changing on Dropbox, and that setup if working fine. The key for me is having a mountable drive (ie. accessible via my desktop) on my PC, but accessing the cloud server directly, so it won’t take up valuable space on my hard drive.

I would recommend you check out Amazon Glacier Cloud to archive your data I am currently using to do so. All my photos and least accessed data all backed up to the cloud and costing me $3/100GB per month.


Thanks for introducing me to Amazon Glacier. In all my hours of searching for a cheap online storage solution, I had never heard of it. It is definitely the least expensive cloud storage service that I’ve come across.

I would say the only caveat is that it is indeed only for archiving, as it takes 3 to 5 hours to restore data. So for frequently accessing data, it’s not optimal. But for inexpensive archival, it seems like a good option.

I did notice that on the Amazon Glacier page, pricing was a mere $1/GB per month (not including access and transfer fees, which were also minimal). It looks like you’re using to access Amazon Glacier. What advantage does provide to accessing Amazon directly?


Cloud storage is something I’ve been meaning to get around to, but never seem to take the time. As a business owner, I know that there are certain files I need to back up. Losing these files could be a huge setback, but I choose to back everything up on my own server. Of course, the problem with that is should something happen to my home, the files would still be lost forever. However, because I only need to back up text files, I don’t need to invest in a large amount of space. That’s why I’m interested in companies that offer 2G of space for free. This would be more than enough to handle my storage needs.

After looking at the sites listed here, I feel that SpiderOak would be a good choice. However, I’m not familiar with this company and know that Amazon also offers free backup storage with around the same amount of space. Amazon is definitely a company that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Of course, that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t drop their backup service. I believe online backup more than worth the investment. I have been using Backblaze service and I forgot that my mac book pro has been backing up. Well I just realized when I lost my mac in a bus trip. It was a pain for me. Well my company provide me the new mac and I recovered all my files in couple of days automatically thanks to Backblaze.

Online backup services have saved my skin countless times, mostly on backing up programs and documents that I deleted accidentally. The one big time was, of course, after my entire hard drive was destroyed when my laptop sat on a pool of water leaking from a nearby plant. I lost a hard drive before to an internet virus and then again for unknown reasons, so I knew that I needed online backup service this time. No one, of course, ever wants to believe that something as big as losing your entire hard drive will happen even one time, but let me tell you, it does. So planning ahead with online backup really helps.

My favorite part about backing up online is that the backup is automatic and scheduled, so I do not even have to manually save everything unless I have just made a large change that I want to be sure is stored immediately. Automatic backup is the one feature I would say is the most essential. Also, I advise everyone that paying a little more for the backup you really need is going to be much less expensive than losing the contents of your hard drive.


I have no idea what I would do without my online backup provider. I travel a bit while I am working and I do not want to be carrying around a bunch of devices so I can keep all my data backed up or so I can get my data when I need it. I used to use flash drives and such, but I kept individual ones and then I had to remember which flash drive was for what. I was looking over some of the information you provided here and I was reminded of a few phrases concerning perspective. I won’t bore you with quotes you have heard a thousand times, but I will say that everyone has their own views on the good and the bad. That is no different when it comes to online back up services.

See, you mention that Backblaze does not have peer to peer sharing. It did not amuse me that you mentioned it, just that you said it like it was a bad thing. The fact that Backblaze does not have peer to peer sharing is actually a good thing in my eyes. To me, peer to peer sharing just opens too many potential threats that I want nothing to do with. And since there are plenty of places who do offer that and are not online back up services per say, even if you wanted peer to peer sharing, I can’t see how it would be a bad thing for an online back up service to not offer it.

To me, the whole point of an online backup service is to keep my information safe and hopefully, private. I guess it’s all in how you look at things.


There are so many things to consider when choosing an online backup service. While many people are lured in by the free offers, it’s important to choose a company that you’ve not only heard of, but has a good reputation. The problem with many startups is that if the company fails, you have to find another company to store your information with and upload everything a second time. This is not only frustrating, but can be time consuming as well. Speaking of which, you also need to make sure that the company you choose has good upload speeds. This will allow you to quickly upload the necessary files, without bogging down your resources.

Even though I’ve never stored items online, I understand the need to do so. Even though I have a server to backup my information, I know that things can happen. Servers can crash, homes can catch fire, etc. In other words, you need to have your important files backed up to a source away from your home.

After looking at the different options, I’m drawn to SpiderOak. At a price of only $10 per month for a 100GB, I can’t imagine that any company would be able to beat that. I also like the fact that 2GB is free, which means I could try out the service and see if it works for me.

SOS sounds like an interesting online backup company, but something in particular about it really caught my eye. They have a Facebook backup option? Wow. I use Facebook quite a bit and I never even considered that I might need to back it up for any reason. In fact, Facebook has been the very reason that I have been able to get my photos back after my computer crashed and I did not have anything backed up anywhere else. Now I learn that I should be backing up Facebook?

Other than that, I really like the idea that I can save different versions of the same file. There have plenty of times when I was doing my homework and lost track of what I was fixing on it. There was no way I could see what I was fixing because I had already saved the modified document. I know that seems like such a small thing to most people, but some of my homework consists of assignments that can take around 10 hours to complete. That is not something I want to repeat.


After looking through this article and reading the various details of what these companies have to offer, I thing backblaze is the one I am going to look into. I don’t need person to person sharing, so that isn’t an issue I even need to worry about. If I want to share anything I can do that on my own through various other methods.

I do like that it is stored in the United States. I have been complaining about people outsourcing. For me that is a big deal when I go to purchase new services or products. I also like the fact that there is unlimited storage. I don’t store my DVDs on my computer right now because I don’t want to take up the space on my computer, but since I buy the blu-ray movies now and most of them come with digital copies, it would be nice if I had the ability to store them somewhere other than my computer.

As far as the pricing, it really does not get much better than what they offer. I would probably go ahead and pay for a year to get the discount. After the data I have lost due to not using a backup, $5 a month is worth it.


I installed Carbonite the other day for the first time. I ran into issues with the install process – it kept freezing up. I rebooted my computer several times to no avail. Even uninstalled and reinstalled the program and it still was frozen.

So, I contacted them via their online chat support and it was awesome!! A woman named Louise helped me get everything fixed, up and running to completion for the initial backup in less than 20 minutes. I would not only recommend Carbonite as a great online backup system but also for their excellent customer service. I am not all that tech savvy and she was able to walk me through everything. (By the way, the primary problem was my antivirus/spyware/malware/antiroot program blocking it from running so as soon as we added Carbonite as an exception, it worked perfectly.)


I like the idea of the online backup service that charges you based on how much you need to back up. Since I work primarily with text, my files don’t take up very much space. I don’t need a large amount to back them up and I don’t want to pay for what I’m not going to use, even if it is a business deduction at the end of the year.

The service listed that provides a free backup service for a limited amount of space seems like it would be ideal for me to use. But they say you get what you pay for, so I wonder if my information would be as safe as someone’s information that is paying a fee for the service.

I also think that you shouldn’t rely on any one source for anything, even if it dedicated to that one service. What if that company gets hacked or something else happens to their system? You lose all your data. Maybe an online backup service should just be used in case the other methods fail somehow.


Online backup services seem to be the way to go if you have any information that you want to keep. I know quite a few people don’t back up any of their files online because they save them to an external hard drive or even a flash drive. That’s all find and dandy until your system gets its bu lightning, stolen, or something as horrible as a fire happens. It may seem unlikey for any of these things to happen to you, but it is possible.

As much a I agree with the use of onlin backup services, I find the different types difficult to navigate. I primarily use my computer for text and pictures. So for me, I think it might be just as simple to use things like Google documents and Piccassa albums. As long as that’s all I’m using mine for, that seems reasonable to me. But, what it I wanted to do more? My fear is that online backup services would be primary targets for hacker and no matter how advanced the technology is, there is always someone out there who knows how to get around it or who is working on some way to get around it. It’s just sad to me that I even have to think like that, but humanity has gven me no reason to think any other way.


I really cannot express how important it is to have at least some kind of backup plan for your personal irreplaceable data. Pictures and documents that need to be preserved can never be replaced if there is damage to the computer or it malfunctions somehow. I personally have been using an external hard drive for my personal data and it actually comes in pretty handy when you are transferring things from an old laptop to a new one. It holds about three hundred and twenty gigabytes of data and so far I have not even come close to filling it up with things that are “irreplaceable”.

The upside of having a physical storage device for your data is that it works rather quickly transferring data from the computer to the drive or vice versa. It also is relatively small and portable so you can use it literally anywhere. You do not need an internet connection or anything but a simple USB to Mini USB cable that comes with the device.

The downside is that the physical drive is just as susceptible to damage as any computer or internal hard drive is. In a fire or a flood, it could be compromised quite easily and that information would be lost forever. Also if it fails somehow in transferring the data, it could damage the drive permanently and therefore block the information I need. So, there are obviously risks that go along with the reward. Nevertheless, it is comforting to know I have things backed up.

I do see the benefits of keeping data on the cloud though and I am strongly considering going through my internet provider to get access to a certain amount of storage space. In that case, nothing can ever compromise my data. It is stored on their hardware instead of mine and they certainly take better care of their crap than I take care of mine. I have broken a few computers in the past both physically and internally. It sucks.

I could also access it from any computer with an internet connection literally anywhere in the world should I need it. I do not find myself in places very often that do not give me the opportunity to connect to the web in some way shape or form. In a last resort, I can usually connect via my smart phone, either on the phone itself or by tethering it to my computer.

I am a little hesitant about paying for the service though. It seems like that could get a little costly rather than just making a one-time purchase of enough space to keep everything you need. Still, it would bring me a lot of peace of mind to know that everything I would ever want or need is stored on a secure server sitting in a nice clean and air conditioned room that has an army of technicians watching it day in and day out.


I kind of would like to give all of these a test drive before deciding on one. Based on the pros/cons, it seems like Carbonite has an intuitive interface but isn’t as reliable selecting multiple file types or supporting external drives. Too bad, because I was heavily leaning towards Carbonite.

I have found the cheapest and most reliable online backup to be offered by My Other Drive. This site allows you to backup as many computers as you want into one account. Most online backup companies make you purchase a subscription for each computer that you back up – not MyOtherDrive. You can backup laptops, desktops, USB drives, network drives, etc.


I have used Data Deposit Box for the past three years for my small business. They do not charge a price for each machine and only charge for the total storage used. I have it on all my computers including servers and laptops. They now have a remote access product as well. You should do a review of them.

So fast, easy to use and great feature to have an iPad and iPhone app to access files easily and quickly with minimal syncing issues. I was pleasantly surprised with how simple it was to download and implement – loved the cute vide on their website which makes everything easy to understand too. Doing the free one month trial but so far so good and I plan to buy it for a low monthly rate! Dropbox is still great for file sharing, Google Docs is still good for collaborating on docs, but SugarSync is a great cloud storage space option and all 3 are needed for different reasons.

If the service offers mountable drives (ie. you’ll see your backup drive and be able to access it on your PC or Mac to use files, but without them taking up local storage space).
O/S Support – does the online backup service work on Windows, Mac, Linux, smartphones, etc.


Great reviews. However, I’m surprised you haven’t mentioned JungleDisk, synched up with Rackspace Cloud Files. I suppose maybe because this article is more about backup vs storage? The nice thing about JungleDisk is that it lets you mount a cloud drive on your computer, which means you won’t be also using up local space – this is especially useful on the new Macbook Pro’s with solid state (flash) storage, as the entry level machine only has 256GB of hard drive space.

We have almost given up but I won’t give up hope now as there are a lot of great options here to share with my team. I personally have my files backed up on a hard drive but only keep the files I need to use on a daily basis on Google docs or Dropbox. I think it’s important to distinguish between online backup and online storage. Dropbox, for example, does a great job storing your documents and giving you the ability to share them with users (whether they’re a Dropbox customer themselves or not), whereas an online backup service such as Carbonite specializes in automatically backing up your files (a storage service is manual).


Dropbox has been around for a long time and I use it quite a lot. The free one works pretty well and got 25GB free storage through referrals and by installing on different devices. One of the cons would be that their first step payment plan is 50GB for $9.99 a month, which is quite a lot when compared to other providers.

I see that the article has now been updated with information on Dropbox. The $9.99 a month plan is actually for 100GB, which puts them in line with other services. One key component is that Dropbox is not a backup solution per say, users have to manually save files in order for them to be backup up. Whereas the other backup solutions in this article perform automatic backups of the updated files.


I don’t think that everyone understands how important online backup is right now. I think there is a generation that understands it and knows that you really should have a copy of as much as you can somewhere online. Your article brings the fact to light that there are really so many good online backup companies that make the process completely seamless and turnkey. Some of them even just backup your system automatically without you having to do a thing at all. I think also sometimes, it’s hard for people to trust the, “cloud.” I think this is only human, and understandable. The thing about it is, at a certain point, you realize that if something happens to your computer, it’s a much better feeling to have a website that you can log into that has all of your information right there. It’s easier than backing up your system every month or so with CDs or a supplemental drive. So, it’s something to consider. You use email, something that has been in the “cloud,” since its inception. Sometimes expanding your horizons might be worth you while.


If you have ever crashed your computer either beyond repair or at least to the point where you need to do a factory-reset, you know that having your files backed up is something that you will be very thankful that you did when you need it. Otherwise, it is generally something you do not think about until you absolutely need it just like a good insurance policy is.

In reading through these comparisons, the one service provider that stuck out to me was the Spider Oak backup service. It seems like most of these are offering more or less the same kind of service, but Spider Oak is different in that it does not charge you for space you do not use. After looking at all of the information, I have decided to make a switch. It was a tough decision, since I have been using Carbonite and there is not anything particularly wrong with the service. I chose it because they advertise all over and I thought that bigger company meant better overall. However, I started noticing after a time that the bandwidth limits were slowing down my transfer rates and the file size allowances were too small to back up some of the movies and presentations I work on, which meant that I was having to find other backup anyway despite paying for the service.

Looking over the list, I see that there are quite a few competitors out there that do not have these limitations and are less expensive as well. I see one company has a limitation of two terabytes, that is extraordinary. Plus it would be nice to get backup for more than one external drive. I do enjoy not having to manually backup files, though, and having everything saved for me even as I work on it. At least now I know what to look for and have a good guide to help me choose.
